The hat makes him smile. He was a little worried that he wouldn't keep it, that he would burn it to make a point, but then the priest pulls it out and that sends an entirely different message. In his mind, at least.
He stalks closer, but stays hidden in the shadows when he deliberately stomps on a small rock to crush it. Make a little noise and see what happens.
